PS5 owners can now play Steam games on their consoles, but there's a major

After years of being nearly impenetrable to jailbreaks, the PlayStation 5 has finally been broken, and the floodgates are opening. Earlier this month, we reported that hackers could, at long last, able to jailbreak a base PS5 and provided a method for all other owners to do the same to their consoles. Unfortunately for Sony, jailbreakers can do more and more sophisticated things to PS5s.

Apparently, some users have found a way to run Steam games directly on a jailbroken PS5. This is the latest in a string of hacks that let players play games they shouldn’t, including hacks that give free access to current games and allow PS2 discs to run. However, separate marketplaces can now be accessed on PlayStation, and players can essentially turn their console into a PC with the newest jailbreak involving Steam.

Steam games can now be played through jailbroken PS5s

This specific jailbreak was first noticed by Wccftech, and it was created and posted to GitHub by a user named leolobato. The creator made a launcher for the PS5 and PS5 Pro called Playden that lets jailbroken players access their Steam account directly from the PS5 interface. Once players sign in, they can access their entire game library and download and play any game they have purchased.

The launcher is incredibly intuitive: each Steam game gets its own menu on the PS5 home screen once it’s downloaded. Players can even adjust settings within Steam games and use supported devices beyond the standard DualSense controller, including several mouse options.

However, the creator has stressed that this is an early-stage developmental build of the software, and certain bugs and issues still need to be worked out. Players also need to buy games through Steam to play them on PS5, so they can’t access games for free through the software.

Of course, it should also be noted that jailbreaking your PS5, or any other console, is a major risk in and of itself. Sony has historically not taken kindly to players finding ways to hack its consoles, and the fact that an entirely different ecosystem of games can now be accessed on PS5 presents an even bigger problem for the company.

Still, users with a jailbroken PS5 can essentially use their console like a PC and play any Steam game they own. The creator has also said they plan to add more marketplaces, such as the Epic Games Store, EA Play, and Ubisoft Connect, to the software. Time will tell whether the creator has enough time to develop those features before Sony comes knocking.
